Writing is Therapy, and So Is a Book!

As an author of fiction and nonfiction, plus writing under my own name and a pseudonym too, people wonder if it can all be done. I’m here to tell you, YES! It’s all about what you want to write, and what I write I enjoy reading. As a child, I never thought I couldn’t write a story, I went ahead and did it. Been doing this since age 8. I loved reading books, but I wanted to make up my own adventures. So, that’s what I did. I wrote science fiction, scary, and animal stories. Like another author, June Pair Kilpatrick posted here back on November 13th, it’s all about the ingredients and how you cook them to make that story.

One definite ingredient you do need is imagination. Without it, you can’t dream up the tale. Even with nonfiction, you need that same imagination to ask questions so you can research and get them answered and then, write the book or article. But without the knowledge of how to write the book properly (hence those English classes and writing workshops the writer took when a beginner) and the persistence, a good story will never get written, or if does, won’t be the well-written readers enjoy.

The voices that talk in my head and demand that I tell their stories are not the only reason I keep writing. Without my writing, there are times I could go crazy or the pain I might feel inside wouldn’t have an outlet. Sometimes I feel the best poem, short story, or a scene in a novel I’ve written are those where I needed to write out my agony and pain. Writing is not just a need, it’s a lifeline. A therapist made of nouns, pronouns, action verbs and descriptions. A work in progress like a ready ear.

So this writer admits writing is a need she can not live without. It helps her, inspires her, and frees her. And she hopes it does the same for the reader. A poem, short story, article or book is a lifeline a human being needs—from writer to reader. Whether writing or reading, it’s the best medicine one can get. A therapy neither should ever be without.

  2. YES! I've gone for long, non-writing spells, and when I do sit down to write, the words pour from my fingertips! Sometimes it's a case of 'must write or head will burst':)
